Just like every year ending with a four, 2024 is also to be a Year of Czech Music. This year’s celebrations can be summed up by their guiding motto: We Are Music. Well-known works and real rarities performed by Czech and foreign artists are to provide a wonderful résumé of what Czech music has offered us, and continues to offer us, both in this country and around the world. Twelve months full of celebrations of the great Czech masters await us, culminating in three festival weeks in Brno.
The programme for the entire Janáček Brno 2024 festival is also to symbolise the Year of Czech Music, with its mainstay comprised of a cross-section of Janáček’s work. Thanks to co-production with two leading European opera houses, the selected opera productions are to be a significant presentation of Czech culture and Janáček’s work around the world.
The year 2024 is, however, particularly special for the iconic opera belonging to Brno – The Cunning Little Vixen, which is celebrating 100 years since its first premiere, and Adam Plachetka and Kateřina Kněžíková will also be celebrating the event as the Forester and the vixen Sharp-Ears.
The importance of the tradition of celebrating Czech music is also reflected in the festival’s series of concerts – for example, the programme for the opening concert of the Year of Czech Music that took place in January 1924, then performed by the orchestra of the National Theatre in Brno, is to be heard in a performance by the Bamberger Symphoniker orchestra conducted by Jakub Hrůša.
The Janáček Brno Festival 2024 will also be celebrating this anniversary year with a presentation of Czech music in all its extraordinary breadth and diversity. Without borders!… This is the motto of this year’s festival and Czech music knows no borders. Accompany us to the realm of beauty and fantasy with Czech music.
